Yoda

"Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings we are, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship." Yoda

Web VersionMobile Version • Twitter: LifeTrekBob

Laser Provision

In this series on evocative leadership we have picked up wisdom from many different sources, including quite a few religious and philosophical sources.
Jesus, Zen, and Yoga have all made the list. With today's Provision we turn to a little more contemporary and yet allegedly ancient source of wisdom: Yoda – that tiny green character known as a "Jedi Master" in the Star Wars universe. Why Yoda? Perhaps it's in honor of the final flight of NASA's space shuttle program or perhaps it's because there's not another word in the English language that starts with the letter "y" that packs as much of a punch when it comes to leadership. Or perhaps it's just because I like the little guy. If you don't mind a little Yoda speak, then this Provision is for you.

1. Provision #7289: Yoda Matters
by Bob Tschannen-Moran

At long last, I get to sit in the comfort of my own home,
watching the birds at the bird feeders as the sun slowly sets in the west, leisurely writing a Provision on a Saturday afternoon. For all the goodness of flying around the globe, presenting and connecting with people who are interested in our work with the Center for School Transformation, Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, and Dorothy, that lost little girl from Kansas, sure had it right in the Wizard of Oz: "there's no place like home, there's no place like home." It just doesn't get any better than this.

Especially when I stumble upon a topic that has so much to teach me. People often express curiosity and sometimes amazement at how I come up with something to write about each week. My answer is always the same: the topics find me. As in the writing of the Provisions so it is with the topics: I simply channel whatever energy and wisdom comes my way. I don't come up with this on my own; I serve more as a reporter on what the universe is doing with me. And the universe is always stirring the pot. We just have to pay attention and listen to what it has to say.

Long runs are one of my favorite times to listen. When I run outside, which is most of the time, I hardly ever listen to music and I never listen to audio books. I don't want to hear what someone else has to say, I want to hear what the universe has to say through my own eyes, ears, nose, brain, feet, hands, and heart. The rhythmic pattern of running and walking, breathing fast and breathing slow, across many miles and many hours never fails to shake a few things loose. And today was no exception.

For one, I came back with some new language around the presentation we are giving in Florida on Wednesday on "
Teacher Valuation: Better Conversations for Better Schools." The difference between "Evaluation" and "Valuation" is only one letter, but that small change makes a huge difference. If you want to hear how that plays out in schools, sifting from measuring value to appreciating value, I encourage you to sign up for the pay-per-view webcasts.

In addition, I came back all excited about what I would learn from writing today's Provision. I already knew that I was going to focus on what Yoda, that tiny green character known as a "Jedi Master" in the Star Wars universe, had to say about leadership. My current pattern of writing three Provisions for each letter of the alphabet kind of pushed Yoda upon me. I literally went through the dictionary to look at all the "y" words, and nothing else (after
Yes and Yoga) struck my fancy. But Yoda, now's there's a character who had something to say.

Or at least that's how I remembered the guy. Although I have seen all six of the Star Wars movies, I have not watched any of them in a very long time. And I have never looked at the collected wisdom of Yoda, it's central, guru-like figure. Given that he is cast as an incredibly powerful figure, leading an order of warrior monks known as the Jedi Knights, one might think that Yoda's short, pithy remarks (in the classic object-subject-verb word order of Yoga speak) would hold more than just a few gems. So I came back rather jazzed about what I might learn today, and Yoda did not disappoint.

Here, then, are some of my favorite sayings (in small caps) followed by some reflections on what his sayings have to do with leadership. The journey hope I you enjoy! ☺

Even between the land and the ship."

"Humility endless is."

I wish every leader had a humble sense of his or her own importance in the grand scheme of things. We do not lead on the strength of our own ambition, ego, size, power, or ability. We lead only in so far as we are aware of and reflect a sense of purpose that enhances life and is larger than ourselves. Too often leaders become impressed with ourselves and carry ourselves with a sense of entitlement, as though we were the ones in charge. Great leaders do not go there. We know that we are but stewards of a force that is larger than ourselves. It is only from that consciousness and stance that we can lead.

Yoda's words remind me of the words in Marianne Williamson's famous 1992 book, A Return to Love: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God." We can be that way, playing large to serve the world, only when we understand the factors at work behind our abilities. That is the place from which true greatness always comes.

"Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be trained. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh. Excitement. Heh. A Jedi craves not these things. You are reckless."

"Looking for someone? Found someone you have I would say, mm?"

These sayings point to a Provision I will be writing next week: Mindfulness Matters! When it comes to leadership, unless we have trained ourselves to be in the present moment with full awareness, without judgment, and with an openness to possibility, we will be reckless leaders indeed. By not paying attention to what is called for now, by reacting rather than responding, and by focusing on what we want in the future rather than on what the present wants from us now, we will often miss opportunities and alienate the very people who are counting on us to bring them together and get things done.

Luke: "I can’t believe it."  Yoda: "That is why you fail."

"So certain are you. Always with you it cannot be done. Hear you nothing that I say?

This exchange between Yoda and his young apprentice (or "Padawan"), Luke Skywalker, brings to mind that famous quip from Henry Ford: "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." Great leaders are possibility thinkers. We are not attached to any particular outcome, but we are totally confident that something wonderful will come from our efforts. Without self-efficacy, not much ever gets done.

"Not if anything to say about it I have"

When was the last time that you heard a leader say something like that?! I wish more leaders would hold off on saying things until we had something to say. In coaching, silence is often the most evocative of all techniques. Don't say anything at all. Just listen. Often, the people we work with, coach, and lead will surprise us with their wisdom. More than once over the years I have inadvertently been on mute while listening, on the phone, to a client. Speaking up at an appropriate moment or pause meant that my client didn't hear what I had to say. As a result, they started talking again – only to come up with something brilliant that might have never come out if my words had been heard.

"Use your feelings and find him you will."

"Clear, your mind must be if you are to discover the real villains behind the plot."

The notion of trusting one's intuition, inklings, feelings, and inner mind is a recurrent theme in the Star Wars movies. All great leaders have some sense of this, but Yoda takes it one step beyond just going with our gut. "Luke, use the Force," is an encouragement to not only look beyond the technology and to trust his gut; it is also an encouragement to listen to what the universe may be wanting him to see and do in service of a higher calling and purpose. The notion that that purpose can expand our awareness and guide our actions is a radical notion, but it is the key to great leadership.

Great leaders have an inner knowing as to what must be done, not because it is what we want, but because it is simply the right thing to do. It is what the universe is calling for. Move this way rather than that, say yes rather than no (or vice-versa), confront honestly or express empathy, hold back or push ahead – such decisions are the stuff of leadership, and great leaders turn turn that stuff into matters of principle.

"Think you the relationship between Master and Padawan is only to help them? Oh, this is what we let them believe, yes! But when the day comes that even old Yoda does not learn something from his students-then truly, he shall be a teacher no more."

"Meditate on this, I will."

One of the most powerful truths of leadership can be expressed in five words: great leaders are learning leaders. When leaders think we have all the answers, when we think that we have everything to teach and nothing to learn, when we stop meditating deeply on what is being said and done, then we stop being leaders at all. We become tyrants or dictators. And that is no way to lead. In order to lead a people to greatness, great leaders must be great. And that starts with the recognition that we have so much to learn. Never the journey ends.

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."

"When you look at the dark side, careful you must be ... for the dark side looks back."

"Careful you must be when sensing the future. The fear of loss is a path to the dark side. Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose."

"Yes, a Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will."

Luke: "What's in there?" Yoda: "Only what you take with you."

"Named must your fear be before banish it you can."

If there is an overarching theme that Yoda returns to throughout the various movies it has to do with fear: fear of loss, pain, failure, and death. The mechanism of action as to how fear destroys great leadership has to do with attachment. The more attached we become to our goals and strategies, to doing things our way, the more demanding, controlling, and ultimately unsuccessful we become as leaders.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with the notion that the spiritual realm can be divided between dark and light sides, it is nevertheless clear that fear contributes mightily to much that is stressful and difficult in the world. Fight and flight responses both flow from fear; one lashes out, because we think we can win, while the other runs away, because we think we will lose. Neither alternative bespeaks of great leadership.

So what's a leader to do? Name the fear to banish the fear. I love that bit of wisdom. What need are you most concerned about? By connecting with the core, underlying value that is being stimulated in the form of fear, we can begin to get a grip on our presence and power. Recovering our balance, we can banish fear and return to a posture of being open to possibility.

"To be Jedi is to face the truth, and choose. Give off light, or darkness, Padawan. Be a candle, or the night, Padawan: but choose!"

Lest anyone think that great leaders are perfect, Yoda throws out one last perspective for us to think about, reflect on, and learn from. Great leaders choose. Of course Yoda wants leaders to choose life. Of course he wants leaders to avoid self-serving and evil contrivances that deprive people of goodness and well-being. Violence, in Yoda's world, is purely for self-defense and the protection of others. It is never for aggression.

But in the end, great leaders choose; that's what makes leaders great, or terrible, as the case may be. The Christian book of Revelation captured the same sentiment in the Spirit's counsel to the church in Laodicea: "Because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I will spit you out of my mouth" (3:16). Yoda clearly bids leaders to choose life, but above all he wants us to choose.

Coaching Inquiries: What kind of leader are you? Life-enhancing or life-destroying? Overly-controlling or overly-relaxed? Distracted-by-tomorrow or aware-of-the-present? Impressed-with-yourself or attentive-to-others? How can you be a great leader who makes things better rather than worse? Who could coach you to become an even greater leader than you are right now?

Mid-Winter Stirrings by Oriah Mountain Dreamer on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 9:31am

Today is Candlemas or Imbolc- literally “in the belly.” It is the celebration of the first stirrings of the fire of life in seeds that will sprout with springtime warmth. Because the seed that stirs deep in the belly of the earth portends new life to come, it is considered a good time for reading oracles, for catching a glimpse of the life that is to come (or, more mundanely, predicting the weather by the actions of the proverbial ground hog.)

I’ve been reading William Bridge’s wonderful book The Way of Transition. Drawing on his experience of the death of his wife, Bridges (a prophetic name for his life’s work re: helping individuals and organizations move through times of transition) offers wisdom on how to move through the three aspects of transition: the ending- the acknowledging and letting go of what is no more; the “neutral space” when what was is no more and what is to come is not yet known (but is eventually sensed as an invisible, indefinable stirring); and the new beginning.

Sometimes Bridges’ “neutral space” doesn’t feel very neutral at all. It can feel like falling through an endless abyss as our sense of who we have been, what dreams we’ve held, and how we’ve functioned on a daily basis no longer fits. This can feel threatening, difficult, frightening and bewildering. Things we once enjoyed no longer hold interest or value for us. We can feel quite lost. And in a culture that loves speed and action, goals and focused attention we can feel like there is something wrong with us.

It has been ten months since my marriage ended. I consider what has ended, what has been let go:

I am no longer someone’s wife.

I do not intimately share my home, my bed, my heart and my dreams with one other daily.

I no longer have a home in the country, nor the furnishings I’d collected over thirty years- my Grandmother’s dining set; the four poster bed I saved for ten years to purchase while sleeping on a futon on the floor; the earthenware dishes I bought for hosting dinners with friends and family. . . . .

I no longer have to find room for all of what I had accumulated over thirty years.

I do not have to shape my day around another’s needs.

I cannot use another’s needs as the reason or excuse for not doing what I say I want or need to do.

I no longer dream of a co-created future with this man.

I am no longer confined in my dreaming to what would speak to or work for us both.

The implicit agreements to play certain roles no longer hold- he as Mr. go-with-the-flow, me as the planner; he as the spender, me as the budgeter ; he as messy, me as neat-freak and many others. I no longer have to hold to the boxes we (largely unconsciously) agreed were mine. I am allowed my own ease and worry, my own frugality and spending, my own spontaneity and planning. (Okay, I'm still pretty consistently a neat-freak.)

There is more of course. Beyond the logistics and agreements of a shared life, an old pattern of being, a belief planted in me at an early age that I had to work hard in every moment, taking care of others to earn my right to be- is made available for letting go. It’s a choice- not a once-and-for-all choice- but a choice that is available to me each day, a practise for one who was trained to be the means to others’ ends.

And, as I let go, I step fully into this time of in-between, of not-knowing, of Imbolc- the place where I feel a stirring of a seed that was planted before any beliefs were learned, a seed that holds the blueprint, the spiritual DNA of a life more true to who and what I am.

So, on this Imbolc, on this feast day of the Goddess Brigit, patron of smith-craft and poetry and midwifery, I light a candle to honour the stirring, and open the dreaming eye to catch a glimpse of colours to come:

a slash of the blood-red vermilion of my own intensity of being, unfettered;

the swirl of the rainbow robe of the story-teller who has secrets to tell;

a movement in the mist- a figure cloaked in blue, headed for the isle of dreams;

bare feet twirling on dark earth, dancing close to the fire;

clear eyes silent, watching, steady in their gaze, mirroring a turquoise sea;

yellow of blazing sun, silver of silent moon;

the brush of an owl’s soft wing on my forehead;

words on a page whispered aloud into the darkness, ripples across still water;

ease and strength in muscle and bone;

a tall silhouette standing in the shadows by the river- maiden, mother, crone carved in one body;

water, dark and foaming, rushing through the gorge between high walls of stone. . . . .

What is stirring in your belly and in the darkness of the earth beneath your feet? What would you honour in lighting a candle? Can you catch a glimpse of movement, a scent of something that foreshadows what is to come that you might till the soil of your life in preparation?

In Blackwater Woods

Last lines of

Mary Oliver's poem "In Blackwater Woods":
To live in this world you must be able to do three things:...
to love what is mortal;
to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends upon it,
and, when the time comes to let it go,
...to let it go.

THERE'S A HOLE IN YOUR BUCKET

THERE'S A HOLE IN YOUR BUCKET
Well, dear Liza it’s true.  It's Sara here.  I've noticed an interesting pattern with my clients recently.  They’re doing all the “right” things to refuel their tanks…they’re getting massages, creating time for connection with their families and friends,  they're taking white space, but alas, they’re still feeling drained.  This is a problem.
Last week, one of my clients casually mentioned she had a leak in her oil tank of her car.  She kept putting oil in, and then a day or two later, she would need more.  Because I’m a big fan of the humor of the Universe, we explored how this “leak” might be a mirror for what’s going on with her energy.  After a short while, she realized she worked very hard at putting energy in her life, but because of a few energetic “leaks”, she never stayed full very long.  Maybe you can relate?
Here are common ways we all tend to “leak” energy:
1.  Worrying:  We worry about things we can’t control.  The next review, the deadline, our kids’ future, the planet.  You name it, we worry about it.  Worry does nothing but churn through energy.  I’m all for utilizing energy if you get something in return, but worry won’t ever produce anything other than exhaustion (and more worry)!
 2.  Carrying Undue Burden:  Here’s a quick way to drain yourself:  take responsibility for something that’s not yours to do, over-provide for someone else (think about your employees or children) or stay in a relationship that’s not reciprocal.  Every time we carry a load that’s not ours, we leak our precious energy.
 3.  Not Following Your Knowing:  Have you ever had a hunch about something, ignored it and went with something “more logical”?  Our intuition is always trying to get our attention.  Sometimes it through our sensations, our dreams, or thoughts.  Every  time you step over what you “know”, it drains your energy.
So many of our clients are committed to transforming their lives and we love them for it.  But transformation takes a lot of energy.  If we can’t plug up the energetic leaks, then all the “refueling” in the world won’t be effective and we won't get to our destination.
In the “Easy Tools” section below there are three tools you can use right away to help plug up your energetic leaks.  Also, be sure to check out the “Upcoming Events” section to details on Sara’s new class “Energy 101”.

EASY TOOLS TO GAIN MORE ENERGY
******************************************************
The following tools have helped us and our clients gain energy almost immediately.  Please e-mail us and let us know your questions and experiences with them.
TOOL #1:  NOTICE WHERE YOUR ENERGY GETS ZAPPED
The first step to reclaiming your energy is to notice where you’re losing it.  Take a look at your life and notice where you’re feeling most drained.  Is it when you’re with a certain friend or co-worker?  Is it when you walk in the door to your messy house?  Some of your leaks may be visible to you and some may not.  If you can’t identify them yourself, ask someone you trust to help you.  You’d be surprised at how much your friends know about your energetic leaks.  You may not like their answers, but be curious about what they’re telling you.
TOOL #2:  MIND YOUR BEESWAX
When you find yourself worrying about something that’s not within your control, (or none of your beeswax) then turn your attention elsewhere.  Focus on what you DO want.  Ask yourself “What do I need right now?” and give yourself that.  Focus your energy on what you can control.   Also, check out the book “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks.  He talks about worry and simply reading this book will help transform your energy.

TOOL #3:  GET MORE IMPULSIVE
We know you.  You are a smart cookie.  You think through all of your options before making a decision.  You choose your words carefully.  You take calculated steps forward.  But, dang that can be exhausting!  Try loosening up a bit.  Your intuition won’t steer you wrong.  Blurt more.  Take action when you get a “hunch”.  Pick something based on your gut or heart’s desire rather than your logic.  You might just be amazed at how much energy you could harness by following your intuition.
May this article help you gain more energy today and everyday by plugging up the “leaks” in your life.  Looking forward to connecting with you soon!

Warmly,

Sara and Michele

Study

A  rush  of  spiritual energy could be triggered by a memory, or a dream or vision, or perhaps a meditation. As a result, you might want to jot your experiences down quickly so you won't forget them. Try not to dwell on it  too much - this is not the time to be reclusive! The process won't stop
-  the insights should continue to come.  Keep  up  your  studies  and meditation, and you'll  go on  growing indefinitely.

50,000 Daffodils

 an Anonymous story sent in by a reader

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, "Mother, you must come tosee the daffodils before they are over." I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead "I will come next Tuesday", I promised a little reluctantly on her third call.

Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and reluctantly I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house I was welcomed by the joyful sounds of happy children. I delightedly hugged and greeted my grandchildren.

"Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in these clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see badly enough to drive another inch!" My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this all the time, Mother." "Well, you won't get me
back on the road until it clears, and then I'm heading for home!" I assured her.

"But first we're going to see the daffodils. It's just a few blocks," Carolyn said. "I'll drive. I'm used to this." "Carolyn," I said sternly, "please turn around." "It's all right, Mother, I promise. You will never
forgive yourself if you miss this experience."

After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand lettered sign with an arrow that read, "Daffodil Garden." We got out of the car, each ook a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, as we turned a corner, I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight.

It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it over the mountain peak and its surrounding slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns, great ribbons and swaths of deep orange, creamy white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, and saffron and butter yellow.
Each different-colored variety was planted in large groups so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers.

"Who did this?" I asked Carolyn. "Just one woman," Carolyn answered. "She lives on the property. That's her home." Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house, small and modestly sitting in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house.

On the patio, we saw a poster. "Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking", was the headline. The first answer was a simple one. "50,000 bulbs," it read. The second answer was, "One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and one brain." The third answer was, "Began in 1958."

For me, that moment was a life-changing experience. I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than forty years before, had begun, one bulb at a time, to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountaintop. Planting one bulb at a time, year after year, this unknown
woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. One day at a time, she had created something of extraordinary magnificence, beauty, and inspiration. The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration.

That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time--often just one baby-step at time--and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world ...

"It makes me sad in a way," I admitted to Carolyn. "What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five or forty years ago and had worked away at it 'one bulb at a time' through all those years? Just think what I might have been able to achieve!"

My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. "Start tomorrow," she said. She was right. It's so pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. The way to make learning a lesson of celebration instead of a cause for regret is to only ask, "How can I put this to use today?" Use the Daffodil Principle. Stop waiting.....

There is no better time than right now to be happy.  Happiness is a journey, not a destination.
So work like you don't need money.  Love like you've never been hurt, and, Dance like no one's watching.

Wishing you a beautiful, daffodil day! Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin.

Change your mood...

The Not-Quiet-So-Daily Dollop

Give yourself a mood shifting boost by changing your posture. Relax your shoulders, then lengthen your neck gently, and soften the area around your heart.

Look up slightly.

Feel your whole spine slip into alignment as you become aware of your bones and the spaces between your bones.

Gently pull in your stomach muscles to support your lower back and pelvis (but try not to arch your back).

Breathe.

Imagine that there’s a lovely beam of light shining from the top of your head down to your feet if you’re standing or to your tailbone if you‘re sitting, and let the light flow up and down your spine, nourishing you.

There is a reason we sit up straight when we pay attention or meditate or concentrate -- the energy flows and our mood improves.

Next time you find yourself slouching, lovingly, mindfully stretch to into grace and you feel better -- instantly.

Today's Intention: Using my perfectly miraculous body to remind me there are always possibilities, there is always life beckoning to me.
